Work Blog

For most jobs I have what I need already, but when an old friend and colleague who works at The Old Vic asked me to record the sound on a teaser video for a new production involving a full ensemble cast and musicians, I knew I’d need a few extras.

Luckily there’s a great new sound equipment hire facility in South London called Microfonia and they worked with me to select the best ways to capture this performance in the highest quality, whilst also aiming to keep things as simple as possible. After several discussions with my client, we decided the setup would consist of this:
– 2 Austrian Audio OC818 vocal mics for the lead vocalists
– 3 Sennheiser MKH8040 cardiod mics for the ensemble singers
– 1 kick drum mic and 1 AKG414 for the overhead
– A DI feed from the piano and double bass
– 2 x DPA 4011 gooseneck mics with clamps to attach them to the guitar and violin

Most of these feeds were plugged into a 16 channel stagebox then fed to my Sound Devices Scorpio recorder via Dante, making patching and selecting which tracks go where a breeze. This also helped us create a bus feed of the piano and guitar that could be routed to the live sound desk in the rehearsal space we were recording in for the cast to hear over some speakers and sing along.

We recorded the performace three times to allow for options, both musically and visually and then did a final pass of just the musicians to capture some close up shots of them playing. One really nice day at the office. You can see and listen to the finished video on my short videos page.
